COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio is awarding $47 million for security upgrades at over 1,100 schools in 81 counties, and will accept applications for another $53 million in that grant program, Gov. Mike DeWine announced Tuesday.
The K-12 schools sharing in the $47 million applied when the program was launched last year with an initial $5 million but didn’t receive grants then. They're getting up to $50,000 each for physical safety upgrades, such as security cameras, automatic door locks, visitor badging systems and exterior lighting.

Japanese technology company SoftBank Group posted a $23 billion loss in the April-June quarter as the value of its investments sank amid global worries about inflation and interest rates. SoftBank Group Corp.'s loss of 3.16 trillion yen was a reversal from its 762 billion yen profit in the same quarter a year earlier. The company said quarterly sales rose 6%. Although Softbank's portfolio is not directly exposed to the war in Ukraine, the company warned that global uncertainty as well as inflation and soaring energy costs would likely hurt its profitability. Foreign exchange losses also bit into its earnings. Softbank's intended sale of British semiconductor and software design company Arm to Nvidia failed earlier this year.

UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA earned praise last year when it agreed to pay referees at its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments equally. The gesture only cost about $100,000, a tiny fraction of the roughly $900 million networks pay annually to broadcast March Madness. Now, as the NCAA examine…
The owner of a music pub in eastern Thailand where a fire last week killed 15 people and injured more than three dozen others has been brought to court to hear criminal charges against him. Pongsiri Panprasong, the owner of the Mountain B pub in Sattahip district of Chonburi province, had turned himself in late Saturday. Police charged the 27-year-old with causing death by negligence and operating an entertainment venue without permission. He could face up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $5,580. The fire started early Friday morning on the ceiling above a stage where a band was performing. Police have said the venue was licensed only for operation as a restaurant.
Chad’s military government and some rebel groups fighting in the country have signed a pledge in Qatar ahead of planned national reconciliation talks later this month in the African nation. However, the main rebel group did not agree to the terms of the pledge. The deal on Monday in Doha has all those who signed agreeing to a cease-fire ahead of the Aug. 20 talks planned in the Chadian capital of N’Djamena. Chad’s junta also agreed to “not take any military or police operations against the signing groups” in neighboring countries. However, the Front for Change and Concord in Chad, the main rebel group in the country, did not sign the pledge.

It's been quite a week for Russia’s professional tennis players. There were four WTA and ATP tournaments — and Russians earned three of those titles. One of them, Liudmila Samsonova, thinks it might not be merely a coincidence that this recent run of success for her, Daria Kasatkina and Daniil Medvedev comes shortly after they were banned from competing at Wimbledon because of their country’s invasion of, and ongoing war in, Ukraine. Samsonova beat Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the final of the Citi Open in Washington on Sunday. That came a day after Medvedev won the championship at Los Cabos, Mexico, and several hours before Kasatkina won a title in California. All three are hard-court tuneups for the U.S. Open.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets mostly ceded the spotlight at the trade deadline. Then they played like they didn’t need much help. The Dodgers swept a three-game series against San Diego to take a 15 1/2-game lead in the NL West, and the Mets took four of five from Atlanta to move 6 1/2 up on the Braves in the NL East. That was after the Padres made serious waves at the deadline by acquiring Juan Soto, and the Braves added Jake Odorizzi and Raisel Iglesias.
The San Diego Padres will try to stop their four-game losing streak when they take on the San Francisco Giants.
The New York Yankees will try to end their five-game road slide in a matchup against the Seattle Mariners.
The Arizona Diamondbacks begin a four-game series at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.
The New York Mets host the Cincinnati Reds to open a three-game series.
The Baltimore Orioles host the Toronto Blue Jays to open a three-game series.
The Oakland Athletics start a three-game series at home against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.
The Washington Nationals look to break their five-game skid with a victory against the Chicago Cubs.
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne feels like he's finally back. It took Etienne getting leveled during a live tackling drill in training camp for him to feel like he's completed his return from a foot injury that ended his rookie year last August. Safety Andre Cisco dropped Etienne on the opening play of a lengthy stretch of live reps. Etienne easily could have stepped out of bounds. But the second-year pro wanted — and maybe needed the contact. He insists he enjoyed it. It had been a long time in the making.
A lack of running water in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sloviansk means that residents must fill bottles by hand at public pumps throughout the city. The city's remaining population has adapted to this new way of life. But local officials warn that the coming of winter could set the stage for a humanitarian crisis. Most of the eastern Donetsk region is without gas for heating and public wells and municipal water pipes are likely to freeze in winter. The head of the city military administration in nearby Kramatorsk said that this lack of utilities would prompt people to use other means to heat and light their houses. And that raises the risk of fires.

Iranian state media are reporting that police arrested an Afghan man suspected of stabbing 10 other farm laborers to death following a quarrel over land. The rampage in a remote village in southeastern Iran was a rare such incident in the Islamic Republic. The official IRNA news agency says four Iranians and six Afghans were killed, and one farm worker was wounded in the rampage on Sunday and was in hospital. According to the report, the suspect was mentally unbalanced. A decades-long drought in Iran has caused increased disputes over water resources and land with better access to water.
China said Monday it was extending threatening military exercises surrounding Taiwan that have disrupted shipping and air traffic and substantially raised concerns about the potential for conflict. Military leaders say the exercises would include anti-submarine drills, apparently targeting U.S. support for Taiwan in the event of a potential Chinese invasion. China has said the exercises involving missile strikes, warplanes and ship movements crossing the midline of the Taiwan Strait were a response to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the self-ruled island last week. China has ignored calls to calm the tensions, and there was no immediate indication when it would end what amounts to a blockade.
A Japanese sailor has been attacked in the Solomon Islands during a World War II memorial service that was also attended by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman. Radio New Zealand reported that the victim was part of a Japanese navy media team and that he was stabbed in the neck with a pair of scissors, receiving minor injuries. The Solomon Islands government was hosting the dawn service on Monday at Bloody Ridge as part of commemorations to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal. A community chief said the suspect was under the influence and mentally unstable. Police then took him away and the ceremony resumed after a short break.
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug 8, 2022--
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has called for a cooling of tensions after Beijing accused her of “finger-pointing” in her criticism of China’s military exercises in response to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. Wong criticized China’s launch of ballistic missiles during the ongoing air and sea drills around Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory. She also signed a joint statement with the United States and Japan that condemned firing of missiles into Japanese exclusive economic zones and accused China of “raising tension and destabilizing the region.” The Chinese Embassy in Australia said it's unacceptable to finger point what it called China’s justified actions to safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity.
A fragile cease-fire deal to end nearly three days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants held throughout the night, signaling that the latest round of violence appears to have abated. The flare-up was the worst fighting between Israel and Gaza militant groups since Israel and Hamas fought an 11-day war last year, and adds to the destruction and misery that have plagued blockaded Gaza for years. Forty-three Palestinians were killed over three days, including 15 children and four women. Life for hundreds of thousands of Israelis was disrupted during the violence. Security precautions imposed in recent days on residents of southern Israel were being gradually lifted Monday.
The town of Fleming-Neon was trying to move beyond an economic disaster when a natural one knocked it back down. The former coal town was devastated by flooding that killed more than 30 in Kentucky. Fleming was founded as a company town; neighboring Neon thrived off the industry. As coal waned and people left, the towns merged. Just 500 residents remain. They're determined to build a life after coal. A new multipurpose center was set to open soon when the storm hit. Residents vow to finish it; for now, the building is a relief-distribution center. Barely a week after the storms, the barbershop has reopened. Nearby, the florist says he will soon, too. Neighbors and volunteers are coming together to help.
Oklahoma assistant head football coach Cale Gundy says he has resigned after using offensive language during a film session. He made the announcement in a social media post and the school confirmed it with a statement. Gundy joined the program as an assistant in 1999 and was on staff for all 14 of the Sooners’ Big 12 titles and the national championship in 2000. He spent the last seven seasons coaching wide receivers after spending the previous 16 seasons coaching running backs. He was one of the holdovers when Brent Venables took over as head coach in December.
The United Nations is urging countries with nuclear weapons to stick to their no-first-use commitment of the atomic arsenals. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Monday that a nuclear arms race has returned amid growing international tension. Guterres spoke in Tokyo after visiting Hiroshima to commemorate victims of the Aug. 6, 1945, atomic bombing. Asked about Russia's shelling on Europe's largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine, Guterres said any attack on a nuclear plant is “suicidal.” He said nuclear disarmament is moving backward, and arms race investments would be better spent fighting climate change and poverty. He also urged Japan to stop funding coal plants.
Three white men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery in a Georgia neighborhood are returning to court to be sentenced for their federal hate crime convictions. A U.S. District Court judge in the port city of Brunswick scheduled back-to-back hearings for each defendant Monday. Father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, face possible life sentences after a jury convicted them in February, concluding they targeted Arbery as he ran through their neighborhood in 2020 because he was Black. The trio's punishments in federal court will be largely symbolic, as the McMichaels and Bryan have already received life sentences in a Georgia state court for Arbery's murder.
In Portland, Oregon, the police chief recently pulled detectives from cold case and assault units to backfill the homicide unit, which is overwhelmed by a spike in gun violence. In Philadelphia, the police disbanded its abandoned car unit and in Los Angeles, homeless outreach and animal cruelty teams have largely shut down. In major American cities, police departments are losing officers and can’t find enough recruits to replace them. Pandemic burnout, budget cuts and anti-police protests after George Floyd’s murder have combined to reduce police ranks and many departments are downsizing. The evolution has affected residents in ways large and small.

California's last operating nuclear power plant could get a second lease on life. Pacific Gas & Electric decided six years ago to close its twin-domed Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant by 2025. But Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom — who was involved in the agreement to close the reactors — has prompted PG&E to consider seeking a longer lifespan for the plant. Newsom worries about possible power shortages as the state transitions to solar and other renewable sources. But it's not clear if the utility wants to back out of the complex closing deal that involved environmentalists and unions, or if it even could.
