KIMBERLY – Schelfhout Lane in Kimberly has been home to several Mexican restaurants over the past few years, and it recently welcomed another.
El Agave Mexican Grill & Cantina opened at 700 Schelfhout Ln. in Kimberly in late May. It’s the second location for El Agave, which has had its flagship restaurant at 1750 N. Casaloma Drive in Grand Chute since 2006. Rene Hernandez and his cousin Sandra took over as owners of El Agave in 2018 and spearheaded the opening of the Kimberly location.
“We had customers asking us to open a second location somewhere closer (to them), and we were thinking of opening a second location for the past two years,” Rene told The Post-Crescent. “We wanted to grow and open more than one location.”
El Agave takes over the former Savor Food & Spirits space and is next door to a former Mr. Taco location. Savor and Mr. Taco, which were owned by Luis Morales, both closed in 2021. New ownership took over both properties afterwards, reopening Savor Food & Spirits as Savor World Buffet and Mr. Taco as Queso Fresco. Both restaurants have since closed, which opened the door for El Agave to move in.
Business has been a bit slow in the new El Agave location’s first few weeks, according to Rene. He said some customers think the location is still affiliated with Mr. Taco.
“But we’re not,” Rene said.
El Agave in Kimberly offers the same menu as its Grand Chute location. Rene said it’s one of the more unique menus you’ll find at a Mexican restaurant, including being the only restaurant in Wisconsin to feature Mexican sushi and pastas.
El Agave in Kimberly is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Dine-in, takeout and delivery are available. Call 920-415-6124 or visit elagaveappleton.com.
